NANAIMO and SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- It was a busy month for Marty Sugar, with four events attended under the Just Wrestling banner. At the Vancouver Island Exhibition in Nanaimo from August 20-22, professional wrestling made its return after a hiatus of nearly a decade; on Friday, Marty was just a "simple" ring announcer (much like his recent arch-nemesis, Scotty Sweatervest), but in order to bring in the crowds, Marty also did play-by-play commentary on Saturday and Sunday.
And the results are in: despite major weather fluctuations and minimal advertising, the VIEX wrestling crowds grew exponentially larger each day. By the time the "hometown hero," Ice, faced off with Vance Nevada on Sunday afternoon, the crowd was over 200 ... two matches later, the Main Event pitting Dave Richards and Scotty Mac versus Cremator and Nate Daniels saw approximately twice that many people in attendance. When asked about the success of wrestling at the VIEX, Sugar was his typically-honest self:
"Let's face it; if it wasn't for the sultry and seductive sound of my voice," Sugar insisted, "the Just Wrestling group would never have had a chance in Nanaimo." Sugar added that wrestling fans in Nanaimo "are nothing but apathetic douchebags that wouldn't know how to react to live wrestling if a genius like Marty Sugar wasn't their to hold their collective hands."
After three amazing days in Nanaimo, Sugar was off to Surrey, for another Just Wrestling event at the "storied" Bridgeview Hall. After being ignored by Scotty Sweatervest yet again, Marty took it upon himself to interrupt the show so that the Sugar Addicts could get their dose of The Sugar-Coated Truth. When confronted by Sugar on whether or not he would ever give him a proper introduction, Sweatervest just turned on his heel and left the ring. Momentarily irate, Marty pointed out the success of the VIEX with Sugar on the mic instead of Sweatervest, before moving on to more important things.
"That Sweatervest just riles me," Sugar said, after the show, "but I'll let my statements in the upcoming Something Cool News tell my true feelings about one Mr. Sweatervest."
This month's guest on the Truth was "Yours Truly" Ritchie Destiny, and Marty was excited to out-scoop every other wrestling journalist, when he announced that the talented young rookie had wisely signed on with "Starmaker" Brian Sommers. Sommers is known for creating some impressive stables of talent, and Sugar was sure that Destiny's career was set to go far, with Sommers in control of it. The brash young Destiny agreed that his career was rapidly on the rise... but without Sommers at the helm. After calling Brian a "dillhole," Destiny was confronted by Sommers himself, with "Mean Streak" Mike Dempsey in tow.
Sommers questioned whether or not Destiny was backing out of his contract, or was he just afraid to team with Dempsey that night, as the two rookies were slated to face R.A.G.E. and Vid Vain in tag team action. Destiny claimed he'd wrestle anyone, anytime, anywhere ... just without the help of Sommers. Thumping Brian's chest for emphasis, Ritchie inadvertantly riled up his projected tag partner, Mike Dempsey, who sucker-punched Destiny and choked him unconscious to the delight of both Sommers and Sugar.
Stating that he was "flabbergasted" during the segment, Sugar continued those sentiments aftewards, when questioned backstage: "I just don't understand why that kid would ignore the sound of opportunity knocking. Brian Sommers is the biggest wrestling genius I know -- aside from Marty Sugar, of course -- and to turn all that down? It's just senseless."
In other news, this was ripped fresh from the headlines at JustWrestling.ca
When asked for comment via phone, Sugar was quick to respond: "I had hoped that when Just Wrestling hired me on, that they were as dedicated to the pursuit of the truth as I was; however, it is has now become sadly apparent that this organization has been poisoned by the lies of Vance Nevada. The man claims that 'tough guys wear pink,' but yet he has backed down from Marty Sugar -- both verbally and physically -- and vehemently denies the obvious truth."I stood backstage and watched that tag match, and I'll admit that Double Platinum took their opponents to school. However, I'll also do J-Dub one better and tell the rest of the story, which was that Vance Nevada was not a happy camper: a blind tag from Disco Fury kept 'Mr. Beefy Goodness' from securing the pinfall after his TKO finisher; instead, it was Disco flying high with a frog splash, who ultimately had his hand raised in victory."
But Sugar wasn't done there: "I'd also like to point out that at the VIEX last weekend, Nevada was just a shell of his normal self. And why? Because Disco, Dropkick [Murphy] and the Major [Hardway] didn't make the trip to Nanaimo, to protect His Royal Beefiness. If it wasn't for a hammer and an inexperienced guest referee, Vance Nevada wouldn't even be the ECCW Champion anymore ... and that is the Sugar-Coated Truth."
September looks to be another busy month, as not only is "The Big Bad Sugar Daddy" getting married ... but more importantly, Just Wrestling promotes two shows on the September 24-26 weekend: Friday at Bridgeview, and Sunday at Cheers Nightclub in Delta. Sugar is already slated to interview Disco Fury in Surrey; and although nothing is currently on his schedule for the "adults only" event on Sunday, Marty is more than prepared.
"Not only will I be making one lucky lady a Sugar Mama," Marty quipped, "but I'll have a full weekend of wrestling on my plate. I'll finally pull back the curtain that's hiding the entire Explicit Content facade; plus I'll be at Cheers to sweeten the card, there's no doubt in my mind. And who knows? Maybe I'll give the All-Star Pro Wrestling crowd a dose of Sugar that Saturday in Cloverdale, too!"
