Saturday (11/25), marked a big return to Nanaimo for professional wrestling: it was the first wrestling event in 15 months, the first indoor event in 18 months (the three previous events were outdoors, at Cyber City and the Vancouver Island Exhibition), the first wrestling event at the Centennial Building in three years (that event was under the All-Star Wrestling banner), and the first Extreme Canadian Championship Wrestling event in Nanaimo in about five years. Plus, it was the Honky Tonk Man's big return to Nanaimo, for the first time in about seven years!
Everyone involved in the show was worried that the blizzard-like conditions would hinder the crowd turnout, but the house was packed. It was also great to see that the non-Islander crew showed up early, to avoid any possible delays due to the worsening weather. The ring was set up well before show-time, giving Disco Fury time to put us through a great training session. As expected, my cardio is still a serious issue to contend with. :-(
Once again, my showdown with Junior was not meant to be: at the last minute, I found myself in a rematch with Barry Goode (pictured). Barry continues to improve by leaps and bounds, and he really took me to the limit; he battered my ailing left knee from pillar to post ... literally, as he wrapped it twice around said ringpost! I was determined to give the hometown faithful something to keep cheering for, so I kept fighting back: a Taste Of Sugar (mandible claw) couldn't get the job done, but I was eventually able to connect with Two Fistfuls Of Sugar (diving double-punch avalanche), followed by the SugarBuster (x-factor), for the three-count.
The crowd totally popped for me, which has never happened before ... I have to say it was something fun! It was great to see the locals show some support for The Big Bad Sugar Daddy. Backstage, I got some meaningful kudos and constructive criticism from Scotty Mac, which meant the world to me: I have nothing but respect for Scotty, as a wrestler and as a person.
Afterwards, I got to watch my long-time friend, Ice, take part in a thrilling three-way Ladder Match ... the Main Event was a brutal affair, leaving Ice with some serious bruises on his back. In the end, Ice survived Memphis Raines and MR2, to become the new NWA Canadian Junior Heavyweight Champion! Winning gold is great, but I hope the new champ gets that back looked at ... it was serious shit, believe me.
Next Saturday (12/2), I'm in Whalley at another In-Pain Asylum "Student Showcase" event; it will most-likely be my last match of the year ... unless I can wheedle my way onto the December 16 card in Vancouver. Fingers crossed!
Until next time, Sugar Addicts.
